We stayed at the Hampton Inn in Mansfield. At the end or beginning of your trip if you want to experience some civilization like I did, you can visit the quaint little town of historic Wellsboro. Trailheads are spaced at regular intervals. This is along Pine Creek where critters, including eagles and bears, like to visit. By then, your seat is NOT comfortable (not that is ever is) and your legs are beginning to feel heavy. This portion is much less scenic so we actually turned around in the Village of Asaph (we explored Asaph but nothing and nobody was around) to begin the trip back to Slate Run. Monday I rode back to Waterville. Deer, elk, wild turkeys, and black bears inhabit the area bound by the Tioga and Tiadaghton State Forests, and you might see river otters or beavers in the water and bald eagles or ospreys above. Absolutely beautiful scenery. Nice scenery along the creek saw some nice size trout, couple deer with fawns. You have to walk to the rock, its a short trail off the bike path, but it really is gorgeous here. Melting glaciers carved the gorge, which runs 8001,400 feet deep and a mile wide. Arrived at Slate Run at 5:22 Pm over the entire trip we averaged 9.8 mph rode a total 118.29 miles and were on our bikes for 12 hours 11 min. The beauty of the Pine Creek Rail Trail continues as you travel south beyond Tiadaghton Campground. The Golden Eagle Trail begins at the Clark Farm/Utceter Station Recreational Parking Area approximately 2.7 miles north of the village of Cammal, along PA Route 414 in the Pine Creek Valley, Lycoming County. There are several gates on the trail to ride around, but the trail itself is so impressive that the gates did not deter from a great scenic ride. If I can believe the warnings along the trail, the timber rattler is rather docile and will not attack unless provoked. The surface was finely-crushed slate of some sort and was well drained and in about as good of condition as any unpaved rail trail I have ever seen. Even though I biked it on a fairly cool day in May, I still saw three snakes on the trail, including a rattlesnake. Also the trout fishing on Pine Creek is supposed to be very good. There are motels on Rt 6 just west of there. Good swimming at rattlesnake rock and ice cream back up the road a bit.
